Alumni Match This Saturday
December 20, 2013 - Every year our annual Alumnae Match has gotten a little bit better, but this year the event promises to come close to the tradition we envisioned when we created it years ago. The Match has traditionally been heavily attended by college freshmen, home from school, who want to spend some quality time in the gym and thereafter with their erstwhile teammates. Parents, too, attend not only to see their daughters on the court, but to renew friendship with other parents, with whom they spent countless weekends in the gym for the previous 5+ years.
But this event is not just for the class of 2013! We hope that alumnae of all ages will show up to compete, and that many other members of the Family will come to enjoy an evening of volleyball and camaraderie. Indeed, we understand that there will be an "Old Ladies Team" comprised of the 2007 & 2008 graduates that helped put A5 on the map, including Mary Ashley Tippins (GA Tech), Holly Knight (Kennesaw State), Jordan McCullers (GA Tech), Courtney Fletcher (Michigan), Kari Bardis (Arizona), Whitney Russell (College of Charleston) and more. We've also heard that DeLaina Sarden is organizing a team from the class of '10 and '09. Joining her will be Ali McAlvany (Eckerd), and Lauren Teknipp (Georgia). Rumor is the 2012 are scrambling to see if they can put a team together.
Coaches typically play at this event as well, and indeed A5 South Director Joe Whigham is among the chief trash-talkers, throwing down a gauntlet to team(s) from A5 and/or GA5.
In the past we have had a parent team pitted against some of our younger players, but the parents grew weary of getting pummeled by the youth. ....but if we have court space and enough girls and their parents show up ready to play.... well, you never know what can happen at SVC.
This is a fun event for participants, parents and spectators alike. Hope to see you at SVC at 7:00 p.m. this Saturday night.
