Sand Season in Full Swing
Multiple A5 Teams Qualify for Various
National Championship Tournaments
A5 Family,

Running a volleyball club such as A5 is a year-round gig.  Though the indoor competitive season is over and Beach will soon be, your Club Leadership is busy closing the books on our 2019 Fiscal Year (which expires 7/31) and planning for next season and beyond.

It is unclear who first opined, "If you are not moving forward you are falling behind", but certainly that is our attitude at A5.  Though A5 has accomplished much in the fifteen years we have been in existence, we have just scratched the surface of what can be done by our club locally, regionally, nationally, and - some not-too-distant day - internationally.  We will be sharing some exciting news in newsletters to come, so skimmers beware!

Here's an example for ya:  This is the last newsletter that will be authored by me.  Though I will remain a member of the Board and consequently be involved in all of A5's Major Decisions going forward, I am in the process of shedding responsibilities related to the day-to-day management of the club, hoping to use the resultant time to develop the Next Generation Training and Competition Facility for our organization - a custom designed build-to-suit building that will be as nice as anything in the country.

Taking my place as the Editor of the Newsletter is veteran Volleyball Mom Amy Bergin.  Amy brings a wealth of journalism, marketing, communications, social media and graphic design experience to the table, and she understands our culture. You will notice a significant upgrade to the newsletter when you receive it on or about 8/1, so keep your eye peeled.
Shepherd Chooses Coastal; Brings The Count to 33

Please join me in congratulating Nyla Shepherd (A5 16 Scott) on her recent verbal commitment to continue her volleyball career at Coastal Carolina University upon her graduation from high school next fall.  Located just 10 miles from Myrtle Beach, the Chanticleers compete in the Sun Belt Conference.

What, you say, is a "chanticleer"?  Inasmuch as several of our Family have played for Coastal over the years, my response would be that you are either a relative newbie to the newsletter list (welcome!) or a dreaded skimmer, rather than a reader.  Or perhaps, like me, you've simply forgotten.  In any event, a chanticleer is essentially a rooster.

But I digress. Congratulations, Nyla, on finding your Perfect Fit.  You are the 33rd member of the A5 Family's Class of '20 to do so.
Morgan Commits to Wofford

We are happy to announce Mary Emily Morgan's (A5 16 Gabe) commitment to play volleyball for Wofford College upon her graduation from High School in 2021.  Located on a gorgeous campus in Spartanburg, SC, the Terriers compete in the Southern Conference.

With the recent changes to NCAA Division I recruiting rules, we expect commitments for the Family's Class of '21 to come at a fast pace going forward.  Congratulations, Emily, on finding your Perfect Fit!

More Gold Stars for Multi-Athlete Families

I published the names of several families with multiple children in the A5 family who consequently spent some 20 or more days in the gym at the National Championship tournaments.  I thought I might miss a few and I did:
  • The Boyds (Ana on 16-3 and Isa on 13-1); and
  • The Boyles (Lauren on 16-3, Brooke on 12-1)
There may be others still.

Each year around tryout time we are asked if we provide a discount to families with more than one player. A reasonable request, but before we said "yes", we needed to quantify the cost to the club, and since we are a non-profit, that cost would of necessity have to be borne by the other families in the club.  As I recall, when we looked at this a number of years ago, we determined that 40 families would be affected.  So the "discount" that the Board decided upon was to allow families with multiple players to avail themselves of the extended payment option but to spare them the expense of the convenience fee.

Next issue we will recognize families eligible for a Platinum Star - i.e., those families who have put (or are currently putting) four or more athletes through the A5 system.  I can think of one alumni family and one family with girls currently playing for us.  If yours is such a family, please ping me back and let me know.  (If I am aware of your existence but you don't ping me, you will have identified yourself as a skimmer or worse yet a deletor, which may mean that you forfeit that Platinum Star.)
USA Volleyball National Championship - All Tournament Teams

We've opined before that an All Tournament award at one of these Championship events is as much a team award as it is an individual honor, as such awards are not given to members of teams that fail to make the gold medal bracket of their respective divisions. And at USAV, they honor only 15's and above (sorry about that, A5 13 Karen....)

With that said, we are pleased to announce the 2019 all tournament awardees from the 2019 USAV National Championship:
  • Ashlyn Goolsby, A5 16 Liang, 5th place in 16 National division
  • Adair Huthinson, A5 17 Scott, 5th place, 17 National division
Congrats to you and your teams!
Competitive Volleyball League (CVL), VP and Other Training Opportunities this Summer and Fall

Just because High School Volleyball is commencing doesn't mean that opportunities to train with our organization have taken a hiatus:

Boys CVL - Starts 8/13; 6-9pm

What is CVL? -  A popular alternative to club volleyball for players that may not have the time nor resources to commit to a full blown club team. The "CVL"combines skills training, match competition, as well as physical training opportunities.

Girls CVL  - Starts 8/14 - 6:30 to 9:30 for High School age

A popular alternative to club volleyball for players that may not have the time or resources to commit to a full blown club team. The "CVL"combines skills training, match competition, as well as physical training opportunities.
